Most are used to thinking of luminaires as simply a source of light. Lighting the incandescent bulb is heating the filament until it glowed. Today the LED luminaire is actually a complex electronic circuit with the LED itself being a discrete electronic component that outputs light. The circuits making up the LED luminaires of today have far more in common with the circuits in your PC then the incandescent luminaires. The possibility to do more than simply emit light but also send and receive data is exciting the industry. You may have heard words like IoT, PoE, Bluetooth, the Cloud normally used in the IT world now being used when talking about lighting. This session will try to demystify those and other words you are hearing, tell you where the industry is now in a practical sense, and give some possible roadmaps of where the industry could go including bumps in the road to think about.
